Massage Training

The requirements and training needed for massage therapists vary from state to state. Most practicing massage therapists need to complete an education program and pass the State or National Certification Examination. Continuing education is required by some states. Some states require you to take the (NCBTMB) national certification examination for therapeutic massage and bodywork after completing at least 500 hours of training from a school or institute. You should then find a local testing center and call to schedule a time to take your test. The exam covers several catagories: Theory Practice and Professionalism, Anatomy, Kinesiology, Physiology, Pathology, Business and Ethics, Self Care, Contraindications, and Legal. The nationally certified practitioners must recertify every four years to maintain national certification status. During the four year period, massage therapists must complete at least 200 hours of therapeutic massage and a minimum of 48 credit hours of continuing education.
